Ways to Stop Your Child from Biting Their Nails

Posted on 1/10/2017 by Cynthia Pelley
A young boy biting his nails.Biting your fingernails is never good, as it causes issues with both your hands and your teeth. It is a bad habit that often starts when a person gets bored, stressed out, or both.

If you have noticed that your child has begun biting his or her nails, you need to do what you can to put a halt to that habit as quickly as you can. Here are a few tips that can make the stopping process easier for the both of you.

Ways to Avoid Biting Fingernails

If your child is the type of person that bites his or her nails because they are bored, try keeping them busy. This is especially true when there is little to do, such as when you are in the car or after homework is done each evening.

Offer some crafts or fun toys to your child as an alternative to biting their nails and see how well that works out. Keeping something in your child's hands, such as a lucky rock or penny, can also help your child keep their nails out of their mouth.

For those who bite their nails because of stress, work with your child on ways of being able to relax some. Try yoga with your child or give your child a day where he or she does not have regular chores or routines to follow to just unwind.

This could help your child in more ways than simply to stop biting their fingernails.
If you are worried that your child's habit of nail biting has already caused an issue, then contact our office.

They can take a look at your child's mouth and give you an idea if there is anything you, or your child, need to fear.
