Keeping Your Child's Teeth Healthy During Fall Activities

A boy playing football; and using a mouth guard to protect his smile.
Autumn means a lot of fun outdoors for most kids. There are leaves to play in, cooler temperatures to enjoy, and fall sports to get started with.

If your child loves being outside during the fall, there are a few things that you, as their parent, should be doing to help protect their teeth.

It may only take a moment or two, but it can make a big difference in the health and safety of your little one's smile.

Protecting Your Child's Teeth During Fall Sports

Any type of sport that your child wants to play that may involve any type of impact, should be a sign for you to look into mouthguards. You can buy them at most sporting goods stores, but they are relatively generic and not very solid in terms of the fit. If you want a custom mouthguard that will help protect their teeth more fully, ask your dentist how to get one.

Eating the Right Foods During the Fall Can Help, Too

Apples, corn, and pumpkins are coming into season this fall, meaning that your child is going to want some of the new, in-season snack options that are around. Work with your child to come up with foods that your child will like, but are also healthy for them to eat on the go.

Consider dehydrated apples without sugar on them, or pumpkin leather as options when you and your child are looking for a snack while walking out the door.

No matter what your child does this fall, just make sure it is safe. Protecting them from bumping into other kids is just one way of doing so. Making sure that he or she is fueling their body with the right foods is also important. Just make sure they know to brush at least two times each and every day, no matter how busy life gets.

Please contact us if you have any questions about protecting your child's oral health.
