Helping Your Teen Overcome Dental Phobia
|
Posted on 10/25/2015 by Cynthia Pelley |
Dental phobia is common among Americans and is nothing to be embarrassed about. The part of the population that often gets overlooked for having dental phobia are teenagers. They are often too embarrassed to say anything about their phobia and as they assert their independence, just stop going to the dentist regularly. Rather than allowing your teen's oral health to suffer, try to help him overcome his fear.
Simple Ways to Help
• |
Talk to your teen about his fears. Sometimes they just need to vocalize what they are afraid of and other times there is a valid fear that needs to be addressed. Unless you know what is going on, you cannot help him.
|
• |
Talk about the treatment that he will be receiving. If your teen is just getting a cleaning and is scared, you can talk him through the process. If it is something a little more in depth, have him talk to us before the procedure so we can reassure him about what to expect. Sometimes the anxiety of the unknown is the worst part of any procedure.
|
• |
Use stress reducing techniques. Teens are old enough to understand meditation, yoga, or even a massage to wind down and let the anxiety go. Help your teen with any of these methods before his appointment to help him relax. |
