Why Do We Get Wisdom Teeth?
|

Many people wonder why we even get wisdom teeth since a majority of patients need to have them removed. They seem to cause pain and discomfort and are a need for yet another dental procedure, so what's the point?
Specialists are still researching exactly why humans grow wisdom teeth, but the common consensus is that they were a part of our ancestors needs. If you think back to how cavemen ate, they were rather large meat eaters. In fact, they ate just about anything found in nature. They did not have the luxury of having the soft foods that we have access to or are able to make on our own. As our ancestors continued to eat these hard foods, their teeth would become decayed and even loose. They would start to lose their molars, which would then need to be replaced. This is when the wisdom teeth came into play - for our ancestors they were a replacement for lost molars, but for us, they are another set of molars that we do not need.
Because of our newer dental technology and ability to have access to foods that do not damage our teeth, we are not in need of our wisdom teeth like our ancestors were. In many cases, this is what results in our need to have our wisdom teeth removed. Not everyone has to have them removed; however, only if they are impacted, do not have enough room to grow in or are causing any type of pain in your mouth. |
