Dental Sealants For Kids

Should Kids Get Dental Sealants?

It is usually recommended that children receive dental sealants, especially on their molars (back teeth). Sealants are an excellent precautionary measure to prevent future decay and excessive dental work. The molars tend to have deeper pits and grooves, as they are primarily for chewing and breaking down food. If your child enjoys dry fruit, gummy vitamins, or other sticky foods - little bits can become stuck in the grooves of the teeth, and are difficult to brush out. Dental sealants on their own cannot prevent cavities, but they do work in tandem with an overall good oral hygiene habit.

When Should My Child Get Dental Sealants?

The most common time to receive sealants is around age 5 to 7; this is when the adult teeth are growing in and need to be protected. Sometimes it is necessary to apply sealants to baby teeth as well, depending on whether your child's teeth have excessive grooves and are prone to tooth decay. It is very important to protect a child's baby teeth, which is why sealants are sometimes recommended before the adult teeth even come in. Dental sealants help to promote good oral health in addition to proper brushing, flossing and a healthy diet.
