Can you Prevent Childhood Cavities?

Posted on 8/15/2015 by Cynthia Pelley
A young boy with missing teeth eating a bar of chocolate. As a parent, you want only the best for your child, but some things seem out of your control. Tooth decay is one of those things that seem impossible to stop. Luckily, there are certain ways that you can help, even when your child is just a baby. The earlier that you start, the better off your child's oral health will be in the long run.

•  Stop the use of bottles or sippy cups as early as possible. The amount of sugar that is left to sit on your child's teeth as a result of drinking out of these types of cups sets him up for tooth decay if they are used for long periods of time.
•  If you use bottles or sippy cups, only serve formula or water in them - never serve juice, sports drinks, or soda in them.
•  Watch the number of carbohydrates your child consumes. The starches turn into sugar in your child's mouth, which means that the enamel is exposed to more sugar than you thought even if he does not consume sweets.
•  Drink plenty of water to wash away food debris, sugar, and bacteria to help prevent tooth decay.
•  Make sure that he brushes his teeth twice a day and flosses at least once. Until your child is old enough to understand how long and how well to brush his teeth, you should be doing the task for him, or at the very least, overseeing him while he brushes.

If you are worried about your child's dental health, please call us for an appointment today!
